The smartphone is not a term Apple invented; it was actually theorized and conceptualized by Nikola Tesla in 1901 according to a PBS article. Smartphones gained massive popularity in the 1990s and early 2000s mainly as a phone targeted for the everyday businessman. At the time Motorola, Nokia and Microsoft dominated this field. These phones had physical clickable buttons, low-resolution screens and stylus used for clicking. While Apple also didn’t invent the word “innovation,” they have used multiple ideas and techniques to create brand new inventions. A quote by Tom Freston, an American entertainment industry executive, who was on the founding members on a team that created MTV stated, “Innovation is taking two things that already exist and putting them together in a new way.” This could very well be the unofficial mantra of Apple, but in 2007 Apple would create something that would be both innovative and revolutionary for years to follow.

 

2007 And Beyond

On Jan. 9, 2007, Steve Jobs announced the iPhone at the Macworld convention, receiving substantial media attention.  Jobs announced that the first iPhone would be released later that year. On June 29, 2007, the first iPhone was released. During the conference, Steve Jobs announced features that are commonplace now but were futuristic in 2007. The first iPhone was composed of a multi-touch screen, virtual keyboard and 2.0-megapixel camera. Also, the phone related at a time without the app store, leaving only the basic applications on the iPhone such as the clock, calendar, photos and email.

 

At the Macworld conference, Steve Jobs gave his vision of what a smartphone should be composed of to make a strong foundation and that was composed of three parts, Phone, iPod and Safari web browser for viewing mobile web pages. This strong foundation helped the iPhone become the massive success it is today and helped evolve the phone over the years. The iPhone’s ease of use makes it favored not just by the business world but also for everyday life.

Apple’s strategy is to release incremental upgrades one year, and the year after releasing a new phone that has brand new hardware and software. Looking at the iPhone 7, which was released in 2016, it is a far cry from the iPhone of 2007. There’s now a voice assistant named Siri built into the phone, a much bigger screen, and it even a lacks headphones.

Tony de’Shay, Student Support Coordinator at South Mountain Community College, is an avid fan of not just the iPhone but of all the Apple products. He stated, “The ease of syncing with my other Apple products such as the (iPad, Macbook and iMac) and the intuitive nature of the phone along with its genius simplicity is what I like the most.” He also described the phone he had before the iPhone and the first time seeing and using one. “I had a Motorola Razor (way back in the day) and thought it was the greatest phone ever, until I saw an ad for the first Apple iPhone. I’ve only used Apple products since 1992 and being able to have a smart phone that would work with my existing products was like a dream come true. There was/is absolutely NO comparison with the Razor. The shape, the size of screen, the touchscreen, the complete look of the iPhone blew the Razor out of the water for me.”

 

Chasing Apple    

   After the inception of the iPhone, Apple has held the majority of sales and marketing shares. At the beginning of this year, they even sold a record amount of iPhones during the quarter.

In a statistics report by the website statistia.com, “The iPhone has changed Apple’s business dramatically. iPhone sales have risen strongly over the years, from around 1.4 million iPhones sold in 2007 to almost 170 million units worldwide in 2014. In total, Apple has sold more than 590 million iPhones from 2007 to 2014 worldwide. In the third quarter of 2015, iPhone sales accounted for more than 60 percent of Apple’s total revenue, generating more than 31 billion U.S. dollars in revenues.”

Apple, this year during its first quarter, also sold the most iPhones ever in its 10-year history selling approximately 78.2 million iPhones.

   While Apple has been in full domination mode the competition hasn’t easily rolled over in defeat. Samsung has created their own line of smartphones called the Galaxy series, which has seen more recent success over the years. Also, Google, which created the android software operating system, is the number one operating system for most smartphones, not named Apple. In the face of Apple’s dominance, companies like Samsung, Google and HTC have offered flexible and cheaper options that have allowed them to enjoy more success over the years especially if customers want something inexpensive or something that offers flexibility with similar features.

 

What Happens Next?

   After the release of the iPhone 7 last year, rumors have swirled as to what the next iPhone could hold. Most iPhone consumers and analysts are hoping that the next iPhone reportedly just called the “iPhone 8” will offer more sophisticated features and be more of a true upgrade compared to the existing models.

Macworld, a website dedicated to all of Apple’s present and future products, has compiled a list of rumors reportedly a part of the phone hitting this year. New features include a curved display, wireless charging and possibly the ability to fold the phone similar to the book. Apple will hold a press conference in September to release new information about their phones and other products.
