Republicans seem to be always advocating for freedom of the people, so much so that most Republicans don’t even want background checks for the purchase of guns. But what they DO want to regulate are women’s bodies.  Many GOP leaders, including Trump himself, have begun their war on women’s freedom to choose and have control over their bodies. Only three days after Trump became president, he signed an anti-abortion executive order. Surrounded by only men, Trump made an unwanted decision for women.

According to politicsusa.com, this order prohibits US funding to international nongovernmental organizations that offer resources for family planning and reproductive health options, if they include abortion. But the thing is, none of America’s funding is spent on abortions overseas. According to genderhealth.org, the Helms amendment of 1973 literally prevented exactly that. To many women, it is infuriating to see a room of old men signing a document that will govern their bodies. Christian values and morality should not be a part of law-making. The main principle America is supposed to be based upon is separation of church and state and freedom for all. “Bigotry disguised as ‘religious liberty’ is still bigotry,” said thehill.com.

The idea of abortion seems to really upset most GOP leaders, and under Trump’s rule, they’ll continue to try and make it more difficult and unsafe for women to get abortions. The GOP continues to express their ridiculous dislike of Planned Parenthood and continue to try and get it defunded, although only three percent of what it deals with are abortions, which is clearly stated on the Planned Parenthood website. Planned Parenthood provides so many necessary health services for women and without it, millions of women would have unwanted pregnancies and there could possibly be an outbreak of STDs.

It’s not only Planned Parenthood and abortion that Republicans hate; they also hate contraception. There is no logic in the way this works. Most GOP leaders just state their religious beliefs as reason for opposing their archaic ideals, but again, AREN’T CHURCH AND STATE SEPARATE? The First Amendment says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” The phrase “separation of church and state” was said by Thomas Jefferson and others expressing their understanding and intent of the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. Shouldn’t the government follow the rules created by the government and not let their so called “religious views” influence the laws they try to pass?

In the past seven years, the GOP party has brought out over 1,000 regulations concerning women’s bodies. You can read about them on politicsusa.com.
